Exit

16 January - 8 March 2020

”We are talking about a tipping point, an exact time for when there are irreversible shifts in the ecosystems caused by humans. A migration larger than any other in history is happening right now. Politically dangerous ideas are spreading again in the world. My work tries to address these issues in a poetic way through the voice of my chosen material and familiar forms as symbols for human emotions and desires.”

Material is central in human lives. In an endless chain of transformations, materials are turned into food, clothes, buildings and a multitude of other things. This notion is the inspirational point of departure in Jennifer Forsberg’s work. Her work is investigating and playing with the intrinsic sensory information in clay and ceramics, in relation to forms.

The exhibition ”Exit” had its origin during a work period at the Oslo Academy of the Arts in early 2019. Two doors in natural size where made and fired in the facilities at the ceramic department. Doors made of soft clay, then fired. The memory of softness remains. Marks from hands are still visible on the vitrified surface. Both handle and keyhole are missing.

Jennifer Forsberg is an artist living and working in the south of Sweden. Her work has been described as raw and direct, but also as poetic and multilayered. She works with a wide range of ceramic techniques and materials and her practice includes both large scale site specific public art commissions and studio work for exhibitions and galleries. She often works in a narrative way, where the physical behavior of the materials mixes with well-known forms and attributes.

Forsberg holds an MFA in ceramics from HDK at the University of Gothenburg. Her work has been in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally, most recently at HangmenProjects in Stockholm. In 2019 she participated at Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale, Korea and in European Ceramic Context, Bornholm, Denmark. Residencies include Archie Bray Foundation, Montana USA, European Ceramic Work center, Den Bosch, The Netherlands and FuLe International Ceramic Art Museum in Fuping, China. She is in the collection of numerous Swedish municipalities, Statens Konstråd in Sweden and in Risør Kommune in Norway.
