Anne Karine Thorbjørnsen
Images Knocking on Your Door
28 September - 5 November 2023
Throughout 2023, curator Kari Skippervold presents the exhibition series Images Knocking on Your Door in Format’s project room. The series consists of six open-call-based exhibitions featuring seven artists.
Anne Karine Thorbjørnsen works sculpturally with textiles and casts, focusing particularly on the folds of drapery. The draperies are visually linked to outmoded ideals about status, grandeur and excess, but there is at the same time a philosophically changeable landscape that moves forward and functions in a unifying way – a constant, active movement forward.
In the exhibition Ubiquitous Extimacy, we encounter a group of sculptures in textile shells and textile-printed concrete casts. The sculptures can bring to mind abstract versions of collapsing columns and pedestals. They can be seen as bulging, pretentious limbs, weighted down and out of proportion due to their striving for identity and belonging. They can trigger associations to human bodies in an abstract landscape – formed anew.
Anne Karine Thorbjørnsen (born 1982, Akershus) lives and works in Elverum. She studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins in London, and after earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree (2012), started her own professional practice. Thorbjørnsen has held exhibitions at Buskerud Kunstsenter (Østlandsutstillingen 2023), BO Oslo (2022), Oppland Kunstsenter Lillehammer (2022), Salgshallen Oslo (2020 og 2021), The Community Paris (2018), Amaze Stockholm (2016), Diorama Oslo (2016), and Center for Style Melbourne (2013). This year she will be participating in Østlandsutstillingen (a regional, juried exhibition) at Østfold Kunstsenter in Fredrikstad. Thorbjørnsen’s works have been purchased by the National Museum in Oslo, Buskerud Kunstsenter, DKS Viken and private collections.
The exhibition is supported by the Norwegian Visual Artists Fund.
